Winter Retreat
From early January, the resident community at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery will be in retreat until the end of March. During this time overnight accommodation will not be available for guests. Visitors can still come during the day to meditate or to help with mealtime offerings. If you would like to offer dana, it is helpful to let the kitchen manager know beforehand by phoning the monastery.
A Dhamma talk is usually given on Observance nights (see Calendar section of this website). The Saturday afternoon meditation workshops will continue at Amaravati, led by an experienced lay teacher. Telephone messages will be processed regularly throughout this time, but in general, written enquiries will not be attended to until April.

Asalha Puja
This year’s Asalha Puja falls on Tuesday, July 7. Sometimes called “Dhamma Day,” it commemorates the Buddha’s first discourse, which he gave to the group of five monks with whom he had practised in the forest for many years. Upon hearing this discourse, one of the monks ( Ven. Kondañña) gained his first glimpse of Nibbāna, thus giving birth to the Noble Sangha. The annual Rains Retreat (vassa) begins the following day.
The monastery will mark this event with an evening gathering, beginning at 7.30pm with chanting. This will be followed by a period of silent meditation and a Dhamma talk. Weather permitting there will be a candlelight circumambulation of the stupa (pagoda) in the monastery meadow.
This evening will also include a ceremony for Gabor and Seth, who will formally request to undertake the Anagārika training (white-robed eight-precept renunciant).
