There are several ways getting to our monastery. Please review the options which suits your situation (by road, rail, air, (local) bus, GPS or for school visits (by your own coach)

by Road

Open-air parking facilities are available at Amaravati. Petrol and garage services can be obtained in Berkhamsted which is 4 miles (6 kilometres) from Amaravati.

From South/South West:
Take the M25 to junction 20. Follow the A41 to Hemel Hempstead.
From London/ East/ North:
Take M1 to Junction 8. Follow A414 to Hemel Town centre.

From roundabout at Hemel Hempstead town centre:
-Take A4146 (Leighton Buzzard)
-About 4 miles later, after crossing a very narrow one-lane bridge in Water End, turn left at crossroads sign-posted Great Gaddesden, (Hemel Hempstead garden centre at the corner).
-Go past the village, up the hill,and turn right as soon as you see the sign for St Margaret’s where the road forks.
-(You’ll know you’ve missed the turn if you find yourself in the village of Nettleden; in which case, turn around and follow the directions below.)  Go past the houses, until you see the large double gates of Amaravati on your left. Turn in and find a parking space among the other cars.

From West/North West:
Drive to Berkhamsted. At traffic lights at centre of town, turn into Lower Kings Rd. (which becomes Station Rd.); follow it to T-junction (Gravel Path). Turn left (uphill) and drive to Nettleden (3 miles). Here, take a right uphill road, signposted Gt. Gaddesden (directly opposite the church). Go over the crest of the hill and take first left turn (very sharp—you’ll know you’ve gone too far if you find yourself in the village of Great Gaddesden.) Once you’ve made the left turn towards St. Margaret’s, drive along the road past the houses, until you see the large double gates of Amaravati on your left. Turn in and find a parking space among the other cars.

by Rail

The nearest railway station is Berkhamsted, 4 miles (6 km) from Amaravati. It is advised to take a taxi in front of the railway station to Amaravati, which is approximately £8. Trains to Berkhamsted depart from Euston Station in central London and the journey time is approximately 35 minutes.

For those traveling from London St Pancras International are advised to take the underground/subway to Euston Station for their train to Berkhamsted (total journey time approximately 55 min).

by Air

The closest airport from Amaravati is Luton Airport which is approximately a 30-minute drive. London Heathrow is around 45-minutes away (non-peak hours), and Stansted Airport 75-minutes.

To reach Amaravati after your arrival at those airports, easiest to take the National Express (coach)  to Hemel Hempstead bus station, which is approximately 4 miles away (6 km). It will take around 15 minutes by taxi to Amaravati. The taxi will cost around £12 from Hemel Hempstead.

From Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Hemel Hempstead bus station
Take National Express Airport 787 or 707 to Hemel Hempstead (35-45 minutes)

From Luton Airport (LTN) to Hemel Hempstead bus station
Take the National Express 707 or 737 to Hemel Hempstead (approximately 25 minutes).

From Stansted Airport (STN) to Hemel Hempstead bus station
Take the National Express 737 to Hemel Hempstead (approximately 2 hours).
Note for your return trip: the earliest coach from Hemel Hempstead to Stansted Airport arrives around 7:50 am.

From Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Hemel Hempstead bus station
Take the National Express 707 to Hemel Hempstead (approximately 2 hours).
Note for your return trip: the earliest coach from Hemel Hempstead to Stansted Airport arrives around 6:15 am.

Airport Taxi
If you decide to hire a taxi at the airport, make sure it is a properly registered vehicle and agree the fare before starting the journey.Do not travel with anyone offering a ‘taxi’ service inside the airports as they are likely to be illegal, unlicensed drivers.

The closest buses arrives in Great Gaddesden or Nettleden, which is approximately 20 minutes walk (up-hill) to Amaravati. These buses departs at Berkhamsted or Hemel Hempstead.
