Dāna or Generosity

There is no charge for attending monastic-led retreats at Amaravati. The teachings are given freely, as are the accommodation, food and all the other facilities available during your retreat. This is in keeping with the Thai Forest monastic tradition as practised here at Amaravati.

We are able to continue offering retreats due to the generosity of past retreatants and all future retreats remain dependent on that generosity. At the beginning and end of each retreat there is the opportunity to offer dāna if you wish to do so. This may be financial, or take the form of volunteering your time or special skills, or offering supplies and equipment needed to help with the running of the Retreat Centre. Whatever you feel inspired to give is gratefully received.

Costs
To give you an appreciation of how much it costs overall to run the Retreat Centre: it is about £60 to support one person for a weekend retreat, £100 per person for a 5-day retreat, £200 per person for a 10-day retreat and £260 per person for a 13-day retreat.

Please do not feel under any pressure to give a donation which meets these costs. Conversely, if you are able to give more, this will help fund those who cannot afford to give so much. No one should feel unable to attend a retreat because they cannot afford to make a donation. Whatever you can offer is helpful and of value.

“The gift of Dhamma excels all gifts.
The flavour of Dhamma surpasses all flavours.
The delight of Dhamma transcends all delights.
Freedom from craving is the end of all suffering.”

Dhammapada, verse 354

Volunteering

Regular Help
If you are interested in offering regular support to the Retreat Centre, we always need people to help with gardening and cleaning, in the office, in the kitchen, and with household maintenance. Whether you can offer a few hours a week or a few hours each month, your time will be greatly appreciated.

Please fill in the form below if you would like further information.

Special projects
Between January and March when the Retreat Centre is closed, we run special projects, generally major decorating jobs and maintenance work. You do not need special skills to join in, just a willingness to support the Retreat Centre.

Please fill in the form below if you would like to add your name to the ‘Special Projects’ list, or if you are interested in further information. We will then contact you towards the end of the year.

Special skills
If you have any special skills such as plumbing, painting, plastering, cabinet-making, gardening, sewing etc., and you would like to support the Retreat Centre, we often have projects throughout the year where you could offer your help.

Please fill in the form below if you have a special skill you would like to offer.

Donations

All donations are grateful received and all are of value to the running of the Retreat Centre.

If your donation is for a specified purpose and the amount donated is more than necessary for that particular purpose, the excess will be used for the general support of the Sangha and to fund improvements to the Retreat Centre facilities. This will also be the case for any funds remaining, once all the Retreat Centre running costs have been covered.
